In the winter it is quite normal to get around on the snowmobile in Lapland to get your groceries for example. But it is not only practical, it is also a lot of fun! Anyone with a driver’s license can rent one, and for children without a license there is even a special course for the younger people.

So, on our second day in Finnish Lapland, we went for a ride on a snowmobile ourselves. First, you get all sorts of uncomfortable clothing, snowshoes, gloves and of course a helmet, so you kind of look and feel like Michelin man (or woman). After that, you receive a detailed explanation how to operate the vehicle and what to do in case of emergency.

And then your off… At first you’re still a little cautious on the snowmobile, as you slowly get used to the controls and try to turn corners. But after about fifteen minutes you begin to get more comfertable, and after a while it’s just plain fun to drive fast.

Te first day on the snowmobile, we did a tour to the Amethysts mine on top of the hill Lampivaara. In the information centre, you often get some information and facts about the mine and amethysts, after which you cqn try your luck by entering the mine and try to find some amethysts yourself by digging and chopping away at the rocks.
Tip: Any two pieces of amethyst found smaller than your fist is yours to keep!

After visiting the amethyst wheather cleared somewhat and what we could really test our skills on the snowmobile. Normally, we do not care much for crossing like madmen through nature on motorized vehicles, but to our surprise it was really fun! So much so, that we even decided to rent a snowmobile on our last day off to take another trip ourselves.

See below an overview of our adventures on snowmobiles and the Amethysts (pictures coming soon).
