We made a snowshoe hike through the Isokuru Canyon in the Pyhä-Luosto National Park, reaching the frozen Pyhänkasteenputous waterfall at the end of the canyon.

Snowshoes sort of look like tennis rackets which you attach under your boots, in order to be able to walk on deep powder snow. They prevent you from sinking deep into the snow by distributing your weight over a larger surface are. This makes it possible to literally get off the beaten track to get to places you cannot get to using ordinary snow boots.

Depending on the season the Pyhänkasteenputous waterfall is either unfrozen, partially, or completely frozen. When completely frozen, in the winter, as was the case when we were there, it is possible to go behind the waterfall and take look at the ice up close. Interestingly enough, if the day is overcast, the sunlight is being trapped in the ice as it were, which gives the waterfall a green appearance. On the other hand, on really sunny days, the ice of the waterfall reflects the sunlight, making the frozen waterfall appear white.

It was a stunning experience, getting there by snowshoe, but also because of the rather overcast day and the ice of the waterfall appearing a deep green, as you can see from the photos below.
