Easter Island, Rapa Nui

Easter Island, Rapa Nui

In 2007, we spent a few days on Easter Island or rather Rapa Nui as the local inhabitants refer to the island. This surprisingly green island without hardly any trees, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, far from the rest of the civilized world, is officially part of Chile, but feels more to Polynesian than anything else. Due to its location and the tourism, most food products  must be brought in from the mainland.

Rapa Nui is not that big, about 23 km’s in length and 12 km’s across, and consists mainly of three volcanoes. The island can be easily traversed with the different roads. If you want to find out more on the island, how to get there, what to bring, and so on, go to the travel information of Easter Island.

The five days we spent on the island, we had an wonderful time, with some impressive views, and off course the Moai. These awe inspiring, stunning statues tower over you as they look into the island, it really makes one feel small and insignificant.

Our top 3 activities:
– Walk along the stone quarry of Rano Raraku where still some Moai stand scattered protruding from the ground
– Stand before the enormous statues of Ahu Tongariki
– Getting a tattoo at Moko Mae Tattoo shop.
